Al-Mahāsin
wa al-Aḍdād (Virtues and Their Opposites) by Al-Jāḥiẓ is a classical work of Arabic adab

merits of writing and books, eloquence, correspondence, quick wit in replies,
guarding one’s tongue, keeping secrets, consultation, truthfulness,
forgiveness, patience, loyalty, generosity, courage, and many other moral and
social qualities.
Al-Jāḥiẓ
employs a rich method based on anecdotes, poetry, historical reports, and witty
narratives. Through these examples, he highlights the power of language and
rhetoric, showing how speech can elevate or degrade a person. The work also
